Posted Jan 18th 2008 3:59PM by Donald MelansonFiled under: Laptops We already knew the basic details about the processor at the heart of Apple’s MacBook Air, but those itching to know exactly how Apple and Intel managed to cram everything into that oh so small package may want to head over to AnandTech, which has pieced together a fairly thorough report on the matter. As the site reports, the processor is based on Intel’s 65nm Merom architecture and packs an 800MHz bus, yet it uses the significantly smaller chip package that Intel had originally only planned to debut with the launch of its Montevina laptop platform later this year. ![BottomsUp Purifier Lets You Drink City Water, Possibly Urine [Concept]](/wp-content/thumbs/bottomsup-purifier-lets-you-drink-city-water-possibly-urine-concept.jpg)
If you have a phobia regarding your drinking water, this BottomsUp concept may be right up your alley. All you need to do is screw the filter onto any standard PET bottle and the water that emerges on the other side should be nice and clean. You can also attach a PET bottle on either end for an easy transfer. Something tells me that this idea is good enough to become a reality —my only question is, what the hell is in that bottle on the right? Additional picture after the break. I’ve been looking forward to the current-gen version of Turok for quite some time now. You can check out a Turok interview I conducted in early November to get an idea of how the game is shaping up.

The Rovio robot is pretty smart by itself as it is capable of being aware of its environment courtesy of the NorthStar 2.0 system that does a faux ’satellite’ triangulation in order to triangulate its current position. Not only that, the Rovio’s navigation system also shares similarities to GPS, Radar and auto pilot features that have been crammed into a single system. It’s owner will be able to designate a route for it, where it can then perform tasks unsupervised. It also comes with WiFi connectivity and a webcam that allows it to be set to “patrol mode” which makes the average human all the more lazy as one can then scout through various parts of the house without getting up from a chair. This backlit portable media player from Senyen Group of China definitely drains its battery like nobody’s business, no thanks to the 7″ LCD display that comes with LED backlighting. That alone limits the operating time to a mere two hours when you’re watching videos. Other than that Achilles’ Heel, this backlit PMP does feature some pretty impressive specs such as DivX, MPEG-4, MP1, MP3 and JPEG file support, DVB-T capability, a multi-memory card reader, USB 2.0 connectivity, AV-in functionality and an optional 2.5″ hard drive storage facility. Interesting to look at, but most people will stick with their iPods at the end of the day. (Read the full post about ‘PMP With Backlight’…)

Macworld’s over for this year, but it’s not too late to remind yourself that Apple’s been around for over 30 years — with a cool gray T-shirt proudly charting Apple’s milestones. Designed by Magnetism Studios, the timeline starts with the founding of Apple in 2006, takes us through the discontinued Lisa, NEXT machine and Newton, all the way up to the iPhone (this was pre-MacBook Air). Maybe the grey’s not exactly a current Apple colour, but it’s a great way to flaunt your Mac love without being too direct about it — unless declaring “I’m a Mac” (by the same designers) is more your style. The Mac timeline T-shirt costs $17 from Insanely Great Tees. Via [BB-Blog]. (Read the full post about ‘Wear your Mac love’…)

Posted Jan 18th 2008 11:05AM by Erik HansonWe can’t count the number of times we’ve gotten to work and remembered we forgot to schedule that night’s American Idol football game to record on DirecTV, and wished we could do it using just our cell phone. Well, the satellite provider is adding the capability to do just that: with the DVR Scheduler (previously known as Remote Booking), you can log onto the mobile site at m.directv.com, and bounce a record signal from DirecTV’s satellite down to your DVR in minutes. The soft launch has HR20-700 DVR models going live right about now, with more models and an official rollout scheduled for February. Even the venerable TiVo HR10-250 is scheduled to get this feature, and it’s sure to be a big (Read the full post about ‘DirecTV rolls out remote recording’…)

This sweet fishtank setup features a gigantic water bridge that connects two tanks, allowing the fishy inhabitants to travel between the two habitats at their leisure. It was housed in the former Evanston, IL coffee shop the Liquid Potion Lounge, and it was amazing. Sure, it’s highly unlikely that the fish even realized that the bridge actually connected two things, but fishtanks don’t exist for fishes amusment: they exist for ours. And this one fits that bill just fine. (Read the full post about ‘Fish Bridge Connects Two Aquariums; if Only Fish Were Smart Enough to Use it [Fishy]’…)

These minimal lighting fixtures actually are designed to be shipped flat, like a postcard. Each lamp is actually a laser-cut sheet of aluminum with an embedded LED illumination source and powered by a single button battery. Created by Dutch designer Sander Mulder (formerly of revered design house Buro Vormkrijgers), the Eureka lamp is completely self-contained, and can be easily mailed in an envelope, then hung from the ceiling using string or wire. Alas, the brilliant Eureka lamp is still just a prototype concept, and has not been produced for the masses. I’m hoping that a little good press might inspire Mulder to put these into production, since they are really, really cool. (Read the full post about ‘led lighting gets flat’…)
