Eazo’s dark tower of power has a curious line of sigils carved up one side, giving this desktop a mysterious and alien look. This is the computer that the evil witch from Ico checked her email on. Regrettably, it’s also one of those vaguely half-baked "luxury" items — $9,000 and up, in this example — that come across as easily replicable by any competent artist. (In this kind of analysis, I submit, the MacBook Air is a good counter-example of gadget bling that can’t be copied with readily-available materials) Eazo’s box does at least pack plenty in, tech-wise: a liquid-cooled 3GHz Core 2 Quad processor from Intel, two duplexed 8800 GTX video cards, 4GB of RAM, and a superfast 10,000 RPM 150GB HD backed by a standard one with 500GB of space. You’re really, really hungover and in need of a powerful triple espresso shot just to get through the day. But that journey out to the coffee shop is just so harsh. Here’s where the Maginfica comes in. This elegant machine is, by far, the easiest of the bunch to use. The fact that it yields delicious espresso based drinks is just foam. Milk dispensing and cleaning systems are also outstanding. But regular drip coffee? Even with some of the best grinds we could buy, it didn’t have much better flavor than Taster’s Choice. But hey, when your head is pounding from pounding too many tequila shots the night before, lackluster mud is the least of your troubles. —Neil GellarWIRED Superb cup warmer. Posted Jan 31st 2008 5:17AM by Thomas RickerFiled under: Misc. Gadgets It might interest you that shortly before Google went public in 2004, Larry, Sergey and CEO Eric Schmidt made a 20 year pact. According to an interview in Fortune magazine, the trio says, “We agreed the month before we went public that we should work together for 20 years.” If the promise is carried to fruition, Schmidt will be 69, Page 51, and Brin 50 before they’re eligible to retire. Of course, none of this is legally binding. But isn’t a gentleman’s agreement more desirable in a world where “do no evil” is a fundamental axiom? Apple’s MacBook Air starts shipping today, which means that it’s only a matter of days until we see a grinning, smug-like man stroking the Air and showing it off in the middle of the subway commute. Then, Mr. Dumas will put the notebook away in an office envelope, after which everyone in the train will slowly roll their eyes. The MacBook Air’s main features are its 13.3-inch LED-backlit widescreen display, a trackpad with iPhone-style multi-touch gesture capabilities, and of course, record thinness. Potential negatives include its non-user replaceable battery, the missing optical drive, and its excessive price. In other news, the Apple TV’s new software update, which will allow users to rent movies straight from their TV (without using the PC) has been delayed for an extra couple of weeks. Slacker’s Portable radio will begin shipping today, after what seemed like a long wait, it was officially announced back in November. The Portable player was ready to ship during mid-December, but sadly they pushed that back till late January. Today to be exact, and a quick check of the Slacker website shows a now updated page. Slacker was set up at CES and we were able to get a little hands on time, which just made us want one a little more. If you have not placed your order already, the Slacker Portable player is available in three models, a 15 station (2GB), 25 station(4GB) and 40 station (8GB) model that will retail for $199.99, $249.99 and $299.99 respectively. Looks like Continental Airlines will be latest airline to offer in-flight WiFi from January 2009 onwards - that’s one whole year to wait for those who love flying with Continental. Needless to say, no further details are available, and we all know that everyone is interested in these twin points - pricing and speed. In addition to in-flight WiFi, Continental is also tipped to offer three dozen channels of live, inflight satellite-based television programming provided by DIRECTV at every seat on Continental’s new generation aircraft. Nowadays, every gadget is trying to be a multi-tasker. Take the iPhone - it’s trying to be a portable computer, a music and video player and a phone (amongst other things). Not to be outdone, Garmin just presented the teeming throng of gadget hounds with the nuvifone, a cellphone that is also a GPS. Here is how nuvifone is being described: “[nuvifone] is the breakthrough product that cell phone and GPS users around the world have been longing for — a single device that does it all” No mention of the fact that there are many other options out there to do that, but I’ll reserve judgment on this device until it gets some use. Classic arcade games are great and while I might not find myself shelling out thousands to by a replica arcade machine, it would be on my to-do list if I fell into a big pile of money. There is not too much to say here, the Gamerator is a Windows XP based system built into a classic arcade-style chassis. It rocks more than 150 classic games and there is the possibility of adding more. I was a little disappointed not to see Golden Axe on the list, but there are more than enough golden oldies to keep even the most seasoned gamer busy for years. Posted Jan 31st 2008 1:01AM by Nilay PatelFiled under: Peripherals We’re not certain making a huge investment in Cardbus adapters is the wisest financial decision you can make, but if you’re looking to add a little Wireless USB action to your older lappy in the most upgrade-unfriendly way possible, IOGear’s got you covered. The company’s new Cardbus WUSB adapter does pretty much what you’d expect, but doesn’t yet have pricing or availability details.
