Army orders 24 new sentry-bots, Judgment Day moved up two months
Posted Feb 29th 2008 2:09AM by Joshua TopolskyFiled under: Robots Sure, you laughed yesterday when you heard professor Noel Sharkey warn against the impending, apocalyptic man vs. machine battle that was to come, but this news may have you singing a different tune. A pilot program in Nevada which employed robotic sentries to patrol Hawthorne Army Depot is getting an upgrade: 24 brand new drones called MDARS, or “Mobile Detection and Assessment and Response System.” The $40 million purchase will nab the Army diesel-powered robots which operate at speeds up to 20 MPH, use RFID tags to keep track of locks and barriers, and can run for 16 hours without refueling. MSI ECOlution motherboard transforms chip heat into fan power

MSI ECOlution motherboard transforms chip heat into fan power
Posted Feb 29th 2008 3:31AM by Ryan BlockFiled under: Desktops Okay, try not to let your mind get blown by the possible time-space paradox we’re about to illustrate, but MSI’s supposedly introducing a new ECOlution motherboard at CeBIT with an “air powered cooler” that operates on the Stirling Engine Theory to transform the thermal output of its chipset into the kinetic energy necessary to power that same chipset’s fan. Of course, as the fan cools the heatsink it deprives itself of energy, supposedly the piston affixed to the crankshaft pulls back down, giving it another potential surge when its heat rebuilds. Tributaries T12 Power Strip
Most power strips aren’t all that handy when you have tons of appliances and devices hooked up to it. Tributaries’ T12 Power Strip basically, er, strips away all the problems that come with bulky AC plugs - it features unprecedented flexibility with a dozen outlets where eight of them can be rotated up to 90 degrees in a single, convenient package. You also get 4320 joules of surge suppression and noise filtering for AC power, in addition to signal-line protection for telecomm (RJ-11), network (RJ-45), and cable, antenna, and satellite (F-connector) signals. Blue and red LEDs indicate that the electrical system is properly grounded and AC surge protection is working fine respectively. (Read the full post about ‘Tributaries T12 Power Strip’…)

Homeless Folk Get Free Voicemail

Homeless Folk Get Free Voicemail
Google is doing something for the homeless community of San Francisco by offering free voicemail - every single homeless person in the city will receive a life-long phone number and voicemail if they decide to take up Google’s offer. This is meant for homeless individuals to get back on their feet by distributing numbers to shelters and job agencies which could help them secure a job as they will then be contactable. I guess this is way more economical compared to providing folk with a laptop and a free GMail account. The program is more than ready to roll out - good on you, Google! By using their hands to draw on the wall, visitors can “paint with light”, using an entire spectrum of colors and shapes. The images will remain visible for a few minutes and then disappear. Built-in Coffee Appliance

Built-in Coffee Appliance
Looks like Brewmatic has unveiled a new design for its coffee maker that is built-into your kitchen cabinet, featuring electronic controls with a programmable digital clock and time with Auto-On function, enabling you to wake up to a freshly brewed pot of coffee first thing in the morning. All this is possible only if you remember to set it up properly before you retire to bed. There are several brew volume options available, including Full Brew, Half Brew and Quarter Brew. I like the way this thing was designed as it definitely helps in saving shelf space which could be used to do/place other stuff. We all know how women love to have a large kitchen.
