Researchers creating flexible fin to make AUVs more agile
Posted Mar 2nd 2008 2:54AM by Darren MurphFiled under: Transportation If a wave of déjà vu just hit you like a ton of bricks, fret not, as this most certainly isn’t the first (or second) time we’ve heard of researchers looking to the seas to create more intelligent / nimble submersibles. Apparently, a few more folks have gotten involved, as gurus from Drexel, MIT, Harvard and George Washington are now collaborating to develop a “fish-like fin to make autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) more agile.” Apparently, the current iteration has improved on prior versions by eliminating drag during part of the “cut and sweep” motion. The general idea is to combine several of the fins in order to “allow robotic submarines (Read the full post about ‘Researchers creating flexible fin to make AUVs more agile’…)

Intel’s Core 2 Duo E8500 Wolfdale gets tested
Posted Mar 1st 2008 5:40PM by Darren MurphFiled under: Desktops If you’ll recall, we already witnessed a pre-production Wolfdale CPU outpace its competition back in August of last year, but the real deal has finally arrived. Over at Hot Hardware, the folks were able to crack open a retail Core 2 Duo E8500 processor, which comes in at 3.16GHz and features 6MB of L2 cache, a 1,333MHz FSB speed and is built on 45-nanometer technology. When put to the test, reviewers found this luscious piece of silicon to be quite the performer, noting that it was probably a better choice for gamers than a low-end quad-core chip. Still, with an expected price of just under three bills, it wasn’t exactly seen as the g (Read the full post about ‘Intel’s Core 2 Duo E8500 Wolfdale gets tested’…)

The end is here for Netscape Navigator

The end is here for Netscape Navigator
I, just like many others of you, may remember back to the day when Netscape Navigator was the easiest and most simple way to surf the net. This was before Mozilla or Safari or even the humble IE were used by the masses. The ‘internet’ experience would have been: fire up the modem, listen to the screeching as it connects, then click on the familiar Netscape icon. Of course, these are also the days when Netscape dominated 90% of browser use. Recently, it has plummeted to 0.6%. AOL bought over the company that started in the mid-90s, but now the company have stated that there will be no support for their products as of March 1st 2008 and instead are suggested current Netscape users make the move over to Firefox or Flock. Heads Up Display via ‘Bionic’ Contact Lenses

Heads Up Display via ‘Bionic’ Contact Lenses
Cool. That pretty much sums up how amazing this new potential technology sounds. Researchers at the University of Washington have demonstrated how using microscopic scale manufacturing techniques, they were able to create a contact lens with a electronic circuit, as well as lights. This is yet another one of those advances that is predicted by art in television/movies/comics/novels before making a ‘real’ entrance. With nanotechnology continuing to make strides, this shouldn’t be a surprise, but placing a device like this in such a sensitive part of the body takes another important step. Now think about the possibilities for this technology. (Read the full post about ‘Heads Up Display via ‘Bionic’ Contact Lenses’…)

Google invest in Genome project; continues world domination
Google has continues to invest in projects other than what advertisements to post when someone searches for LOLcats by throwing the weight of it’s giant stacks of cash at Harvard’s George Church. Dr Church plans to spend $1 billion to tie DNA information to each person’s health history in an attempt to create a database for finding new medicines. His credentials are high as he helped develop the first direct genomic sequencing method in 1984. It’s good to see the heavyweights of the tech industry to contribute to the overall science community. American science has been suffering in the last few years even as interest in technology has been on the upswing and this type of investment can only help in the long term.
