Samsung and Adidas offer mobile phone for athletes

Posted on Mar 10, 2008 04:18:51 PM

Nike and Apple might have the Nike+ipod technology as we reported last week, but now another sporting gear manufacturer and an electronics company is teaming up. This time the two companies are Adidas and Samsung with a productcalled miCoach.

miCoach consists of a Samsung mobile phone, a heart rate monitor, a stride sensor chip which is compatible with all Adidas running footwear, compatible Adidas apparel and a miCoach website. The miCoach will launch this month in Europe and will be available at Samsung and Adidas stores. Owners will be able to setup exercise programs and track their progress using miCoach. miCoach is the result of two years of collaboration between Adidas and Samsung with input from the Athletes’ Performance Institute (API) at Arizona State University.

This is a good combination of technologies. The Nike and Apple partnership made sense because of the use of the iPod by many athletes and folks who exercise. It makes perfect sense that these same people would carry a cell phone so why not incorporate wireless and tracking technology into a Samsung mobile phone? If successful in Europe there is a good chance we’ll see this over in the States as well.
