The PerioSim is a dental training simulator for budding dentists, making me wonder whether the Nintendo DS’ Trauma Center kicked off this idea in the medical world. In this simulator, arealistic 3-D human mouth is shown in real-time, where the user will be able to adjust the model position, viewpoint and transparency level accordingly. A haptic device is used to send feedback of actual sensations in the virtual mouth, doing away with the need for an actual human guinea pig. Instructors will then be able to recreate short scenarios of periodontal procedures such as the removal of wisdom teeth, and these procedures can be saved and replayed at any time for future reference. Posted Mar 24th 2008 1:43AM by Ryan BlockFiled under: GPS, Transportation We suppose the line of thinking with the DSUS DS-400GB is that you’re probably already eying your rear-view mirror plenty, so why not just split off a third and throw a 4-inch GPS nav unit up in there? Not a bad idea, but don’t you want to be looking forward — not behind you — when considering your next turn? Not that it’s of any consequence, anyway, this thing’s straight outta China with no US release or distro (yet).Tags: sat-nav, pvr, consumer technology, DVD (Read the full post about ‘DSUS DS-400GB splits rear-view with GPS’…)

The world record for solving a Rubik’s Cube currently stands at 9.18 seconds, so if you think you have what it takes to equal or break that record but haven’t yet done so due to a cranky old Rubik’s Cube that moves like a sluggard, then this Speed Cubing Kit is just what you need. Each purchase comes with screwdrivers, the all important lubricant, and a little manual to help you get started. Unfortunately, it is all in Japanese so you’ll need to get some external help before you get to dip below the world record (or at least, attempt in doing so). I think it is a very fine line that devices like the Myka treads, since it makes torrent downloading a whole lot easier as long as it remains hooked up to the Internet via LAN or WiFi. Available in 80GB, 160GB and 500GB capacities, each Myka comes with a torrent client on Linux as well. Features include outputs for HDMI, composite, S-Video and SPDIF in addition to the usual slew of codec support. Prices range from $299 to $459, depending on the capacity. I trust you will be able to make the right choices when it comes to downloading torrents, but chances are most people will use it for more nefarious purposes (I’ll be guilty of it too). Dell is packing some serious tech in its new Latitude E-series line, with the E6400 an E6500 spearheading the cause. Both of these models will be the first in their class that feature LED-backlit displays, where the 14″ E6400 has a 1,440 x 900 resolution while the 15.4″ E6500 comes with a resolution of 1,920 x 1,200. You can also opt to include a 256MB NVIDIA graphics card for all your gaming and entertainment needs while taking a break from all that office work. The option to include a GPS receiver is there as well, along with Bluetooth 2.1 connectivity and “next-generation” wide-area wireless Internet (no idea on whether this will be WiMAX or HSPA). More details to come as Dell prepares these systems for a June launch. (Read the full post about ‘Dell Has New Latitudes’…)

Night cyclists have a much higher risk of being knocked down due to lowered visibility whenever vampires come out to roam, but the Tong City Bike concept could make life a whole lot safer for both the cyclist and other road users. This bike design features an all-in-one housing for the brake system, drivetrain, shock absorbers and gears, where integrated light tubes (customizable in any color you like) are located on the bike itself to increase your visibility. I think more photos of unidentified alien craft will start popping up in your local gossip magazine whenever you take this out for a ride at night. Windows users who have iTunes or QuickTime might have noticed recently that the Apple Software Update comes with an uninvited guest this time round - the new Safari 3.1. Do you think this kind of tactic will actually be detrimental, or is it not worth getting all worked up? All I can say is, it is always good to keep an eye on just what kind of software updates are being installed in your computer before you click the “Yes” or “Ok” button the next time round.
