Posted Mar 31st 2008 5:10AM by Thomas RickerFiled under: Digital Cameras, Peripherals While it may look like an overhead projector without any hints to the scale, you’re actually looking at HP’s (relatively) tiny Elite Auto Focus Webcam. Compatible with all the major PC-based, video chat solutions out there (Yahoo, Skype, MS Messenger, AIM), the USB 2.0 cam clips onto your monitor and features a 3 megapixel CMOS camera capable of shooting video ranging from 640 x 480 pixels at 30fps quality on down to 1,600 x 1,200 at a stuttering 5fps. CanSecWest has claimed its second victim. After last week’s pwnage of a macbook air, there were two notebook computers left to win by hacking them: one running Widows Vista and one running Ubuntu Linux. The Linux box remained uncracked, but hacker Shane Macaulay successfully compromised a fully patched Vista system using a Flash exploit.
According to The Register, the attack took a good deal longer than Charlie Miller’s two-minute subjugation of the MacBook Air. Macaulay’s attack was initially neutralized by Windows Vista Service Pack One, but after some more work he and his accomplice Alex Sotirov managed to route around it with a little javascript.
The perpetrators get to keep the Fujitsu U810 and $5,000 as a prize.

Here’s a waterbed that not only provides superior comfort as you take a break after a long, hard day at the office - it also features a dedicated base plate where you will be able to mount loudpseakers inside the bed. Well, all you need to do then is to hook up a suitable audio source and play your favorite relaxing music. There is no word on pricing, but Akva Sound claims the whole experience will be extremely surreal since it uses water’s unique properties as a carrier of sound and oscillation to envelop you in its embrace. Fujifilm is currently offering the option in include a LoJack-designed tracker in its storage devices, allowing you to keep track of your precious backup data wherever you go. This new service will set you back by $150 per device monthly, so make sure you have only mission critical data inside unless you’re swimming in a pool of unlimited cash. Corporations will definitely find this offer tempting, since the fallout from a class-action lawsuit due to mass identity theft will probably hurt the company’s pockets (and image) more in the long run. April 1 looks set to be the date where Nokia will announce the new Nokia N810 Internet Tablet - WiMAX Edition. It looks pretty much like your standard N810, save for the fact that it comes in black brushed aluminum instead of blue. If you happen to by in Vegas on the first day of April, why not drop by where the CTIA Wireless event will be held? It’ll be a blast, as any event in Vegas always is. Apple is currently searching the job market for a Handwriting Recognition Engineer, at least since August 11th, 2005. This position in Apple’s Handwriting Recognition team will probably be responsible for Mac OS X’s Inkwell technology. For those who are not in the know, Inkwell technology was based on handwriting technology developed in-house by Apple for the Newton handheld computer in the 90s. Since the Newton’s fall in the last decade, Inkwell has found very little or no use at all, but this position could bring about the promise of the fabled Apple Tablet. The BlackBerry 9000 as featured on Engadget seems to have received a major revamp where its software is concerned, along with a more streamlined hardware design. It uses a strip interface instead of the vertical, Windows-like interface that are being utilized in current models. The chances are mostly cosmetic, with transitions and other animations being sleeker compared to its predecessors. Confirmed features include 3G, HSDPA connectivity, WiFi support and a sharper screen resolution. We’ll probably have to wait until July or August to see the blackberry 9000 arrive in stores. Adobe’s highly buzzed launch of Photoshop Express has been well-received, for the most part. However, some users have been appalled by a discovered clause in Adobe’s full terms of service for Photoshop Express, which reads: “8. Use of Your Content. Adobe does not claim ownership of Your Content. However, with respect to Your Content that you submit or make available for inclusion on publicly accessible areas of the Services, you grant Adobe a worldwide, royalty-free, nonexclusive, perpetual, irrevocable, and fully sublicensable license to use, distribute, derive revenue or other remuneration from, reproduce, modify, adapt, publish, translate, publicly perform and publicly display such Content (in whole or in part) and to incorporate such Content into other Materials or works in any format or medium now known or later developed.” The paragraph practically grants Adobe full rights to do whatever they wish with your photos (including monetary gain), which I admit, is quite ridiculous. Walter L. Wagner and Luis Sancho of Hawaii seem to have been smoking too much stuff lately. I’m saying this because on March 21, they filed a lawsuit in a district court in Honolulu, Hawaii against the European Center for Nuclear Research or CERN. This lawsuit seeks to place a temporary restraining order on CERN’s latest and greatest project ever: the Large Hadron Collider. And what is it that the L. H. C. does, you ask? Oh, nothing. It just recreates the Big Bang. You know, that awesome explosion that started the Universe? (Read the full post about ‘Two “concerned citizens” hamper recreation of Big Bang’…)
