Nothing burns time at the end of a long work day better than some good, old-fashioned gadget lust. There are two very good unboxings floating around the web today, the first is a video of the new 8.9-inch Eee PC and then one of Canon’s newest iteration of the Digital Rebel, the XSi. We’ve covered the Eee PC 900 a number of times, but it is not out for a few weeks here in the US. A number of publications overseas have looked at them already, but with this unboxing you can make believe that you own one. Take notice of that display, it looks way better than the original 7-inch model. Next Engadget points us over to a photo unboxing of the Digital Rebel XSi, the replacement of the XTi. I always love those building block toy sets such as the Erector, K’nex, and the Almighty Lego. The only problem is that these sets are incompatible with each other. However, the Uberstix, a new construction kit toy, is designed to connect to all of the aforementioned building toy brands, even the Zoobs (although I never heard of that one). The basic Uberstix building set contains about 450 pieces that allow the player to build cool things such as a ray gun, sailboat, and other models. There is a separate kit available for the ultra cool Uberpult, which allows you to fling things. As you can see, all sorts of construction toys are used in the making of these models, even non-construction toy materials such as spoons and even bottled water bottles under the ships. LaCie has bumped up its line of rugged hard drives with this 500GB model, imaginatively called the LaCie Rugged Hard Disk. Portable storage solutions are a dime-a-dozen nowadays, but what makes this one quite exceptional is the means LaCie has taken to protect the hard drive. Inside of the tiny package is a 2.5-inch hard drive that is protected with anti-shock rubber bumpers, a protective aluminum shell and a shock-resistant rubber sleeve. So yes, this drive can take the daily wear and tear as you throw it in a bag and take it out repeatedly throughout the day. The new and improved 500GB capacity means this tiny drive has more than enough room for all of those completely legal files you regularly transport from computer to computer. When it’s not playing music or a video for you during sanctioned “breaks” at work, what is your ipod nano doing? Considering how brazen it became after slimming down, my guess would be that it’s just lounging on its back and falling asleep due to inactivity. It’s time to teach that lazy player a lesson. I mean, if you have to work, why shouldn’t it? Snap it into one of these apple-shaped kickstand hard cases ($14) from USB Fever, set it up next to your computer, navigate to the Photo menu, and press play. Voila! Your nano is now serving as a digital photo frame instead of dozing off and contributing nothing to society. And by “society,” of course I mean your entertainment needs. Isn’t it amazing how much smaller our technology is, compared to what our technology was? I once heard that the first computers took up entire buildings, and yet they had no more memory than an average cellular phone. That’s decades of progress in electronic technology for you. I am proud to report that in just two decades of electronic progress, someone has actually designed a Nintendo Entertainment System that is the size of an NES cartridge. Popular console modder and DIYer Kotomi has created the Fami-Card, which uses a now-vintage 8-bit Super Mario Brothers cartridge for a housing for a full NES player. Add this one to the rumor mill: T-Mobile will be getting its first 3G networks up and running by May, and will roll out UMTS network support for other markets shortly thereafter. On top of the list of markets that will be getting 3G network support is New York, while Phoenix barely makes it at 27th. But this is not about the numbers. If this rumor holds true, then a lot of people would be happy - T-Mobile might be able to sell more handsets because it can now offer those that have 3G network support. And customers will have more choices now; if they can afford to upgrade to 3G then why not? You think this has anything to do with the other rumors concerning a June release of a 3G capable internet device, though? T-Mobile is running a campaign to get more people to switch over to paperless billing to help be more “green”. T-Mobile is partnering with The Arbor Day Foundation and will be planting at least 150,000 trees in honor of those of you who choose to go with paperless billing. Not only are you saving trees, but you’re helping plant them! If you want to switch over to paperless billing and stop clogging up your mailbox, head over to my.t-mobile.com/plantatree before things end on April 25th. If you’re a smart one and already on the paperless billing bus, just jump over there and confirm that you want T-Mo to plant a tree in your honor. by Paul Miller, posted Apr 22nd 2008 at 10:25AM Seagate claims it’s the first company to hit the magical “one billion drives shipped” mark, and doesn’t plan on slowing down any time soon. The company was founded in 1979, with its first drive offering up 5MB of storage for a whopping $1,500. We’ve certainly come a long way in 29 years, and Seagate expects to ship its next billion drives in less than five years. Of course, with all this “cloud computing” talk we’d think drive sales have to slow down at some point, but there’s certainly no sign of our GB appetites abating just yet.
