Video: Microsoft Surface at Sheraton Hotel & Resorts
When Microsoft first showed off their new “Surface” system, the general consensus was, “Well, that’s cool. What in the world do I use it for, though?” To date, there have only been two real-world applications for the table-turned-computer-turned-digital life. At Harrah’s Rio Casino in Las Vegas it’s employed as nothing more than a cool-looking bar game machine. The other company to have them at this point is AT&T, the Surface can be seen at a few of their stores doing its cell phone promotion thing. Today, Microsoft added another client to the list of Surface owners, Sheraton Hotels.
In their Boston, Chicago, New York, San Francisco and Seattle hotels, travelers will be able to use the device for a myriad of applications; finally giving the Surface the workout it has needed. The video above advertises that the table will be used as a way to explore the city you’re staying in through maps & directions, the “Sounds of Sheraton” (seriously, a playlist developed with Sony artists), photos and videos of local attractions, and a “virtual concierge” service with reviews and information on local haunts.
While it’s unthinkable that this could replace having an actual concierge at each hotel, Microsoft is saying that it will become a place for people to mingle in the lobby. It’s sure to work a lot better than, “Mommy’s checking in, why don’t you go play in the hotel bar while you wait?”
