The U.S. Army has released a report containing concerns that Twitter could be used by terrorists as a way of planning attacks and keeping tabs on each other. It also contained several scenarios of such a use such as a terrorist using the microblogging site to send a tweet to remotely set off an explosive device. A second terrorist with the detonator would receive the tweet. “Twitter is already used by some members to post and/or support extremist ideologies and perspectives,” the report said. “For example, there are multiple pro- and anti-Hezbollah Tweets. In addition, extremist and terrorist use of Twitter could evolve over time to reflect tactics that are already evolving in use by ‘hacktivists’ and activists for surveillance. Sonos has added a few new features to its in-home streaming music players today. First is a software update for the actual Sonos gear, which gets bumped to version 2.7 and brings support for the Pandora and Last.FM music streaming services. More interesting, though is the new, free, Sonos Controller application for the iphone.
Flashlights are not always the most convenient for walking in the dark. Particularly if you’re clumsy even when the sun is up. The circle of light starts to get fairly dim around the edges, so really you only get one direct area that stays lit. Which means you have to choose to illuminate what’s ahead or what’s at you feet. That or you could just move the flashlight around a lot and somehow manage to get both. Well with this NightWalker both what’s ahead and what’s at your feet will stay visible. It has two separate LED lights to keep you covered. That will also likely make midnight walks with your dog a lot easier. Especially if your pup likes to dart in front of you and almost make you break your neck. The LED lights in the flashlight are said to be 10x more powerful than the average LED and won’t ever need replaced. If you’re worried about staying visible to traffic at night you can flip on the red flashing taillight on the back of the flashlight. To pick one up it will cost you $39.95. Source: LikeCool

The unused portions of the television broadcast spectrum known as white spaces has become the new battleground pitting celebrity performers against big name technology companies. Country singer Dolly Parton is the latest among celebrities to urge the Federal Communications Commission to put off a vote scheduled for Nov. 4 on the issue. Parton has mega pastor Joel Osteen on her side. They, other broadcasters and live stage performers, fear that opening up white spaces to new devices will interfere with their ability to use wireless microphones. But Parton and Osteen are up against a powerful coalition of tech companies. Google, Dell and Microsoft wrote their letters separately to the FCC urging for a vote. You may not think much about your keyboard, but apart from the mouse, pretty much everything you do to your computer goes through it. That’s why quality keyboards, like the Apple II Extended and the IBM model M, can make aficionados swoon. Typing is so integral to the computing experience that a good-quality keyboard makes a world of difference. But is it worth spending $170 to get a better keyboard than the one that came with your computer? For the last couple of weeks I have been using the Das Keyboard, a sleek black monolith with many of the features of Apple’s and IBM’s legendary input devices. In fact Das Keyboard touts its product as very similar to the Model M, and it contains mechanical, Cherry MX-style key switches, just like the IBM. I’ve seen and heard all kinds of things happen on the internet. This one by Facebook and SpeedDate.com definitely ranks up there as one of the oddest internet business deals I’ve heard of. If you are a Facebook user that plays the game Oregon Trail, you had better be prepared because your application is no longer going to be the one you know and love. It’s going to be one that is trying to sell you on love. Or find you love . . . or something. (Read the full post about ‘You enjoyed the Trail, now, want a date?’…)
[First published in Spire] For Sindhu Venkatanarayanan, the earth is her catwalk. The passionate and knowledgeable London-based founder of the online boutique DeviDoll has assembled a selection of super-stylish labels that warrants just as much attention from fashion editors as it does from the Sierra Club. In my opinion, there is no better niche Website focused on this growing arena. Everything is exquisitely tailored and made from eco-friendly fabrics, such as organic cotton, vintage cashmere, soy, Tencel and bamboo. In addition to cute dresses, blazers, tops, jeans and even bustiers, you’ll find sassy hats and bags made of re-appropriated or sustainable fabric. I have to admit, recently, if text is not staring at me from a screen I become uninterested very quickly. Although, from reading about this upcoming book, I might have to actually read a book, or find a Kindle to read it on. The book is called “iBrain: Surviving the Technological Alteration of the Modern Mind,” by Gary Small. Small is a neuroscientist from UCLA. The idea of actually reading the book somewhat defeats the point made in the book, however. (Read the full post about ‘New book says tech is better than books’…)

One main disadvantage about the Eee PC is its relatively short battery life, but then again you can’t really have unprecedented levels of portability without sacrificing something, right? At least not until engineers manage to come up with a battery solution that is compact, long lasting and light. In the meantime, you will have to settle for a 12,000mAh (yes, twelve thousand!) battery that works with both Eee PC 901 and 1000 series, retailing for a mere $61.87. This battery is able to last nearly twice as long as a regular 6-cell 6,600mAh battery, making 10 hours of non-stop use a very real possibility. The main drawback would be the extra weight you have to lug around as this 10-cell monster adds in 9.05 ounces more compared to the aforementioned 6-cell battery.
